1949- Present
Miuccia Prada didn’t start off as a fashion designer, she has a PhD in Political Science, and she also performed as a mime. In 1978 she took over Prada that her grandfather founded in 1913, she didn’t want to take over the business and was a bit reluctant to tackle all of the company’s tasks. In 1985 she designed a line of black unlabeled nylon bags that became extremely popular; a few years later she launched her ready to wear line in 1989. In 1992 she created a less expensive line called Miu Miu; her own personal wardrobe inspired this collection. Miuccia new she made it as a designer when she won a Council of Fashion Designers of America International Award in 1993. Miuccia accredits much of her success to her husband and business partner Patrizio Bertelli, Miuccia has said, “if I hadn’t met him, I probably would have given up or at least not been able to do what I have done.” She also has said that she always brings a reality check to fashion, “I love fashion, but I think it should stay in its place, not rule your life. It’s a very nice part of your life, but I think it should be fun” (Vogue).

Miuccia Prada influences many designers, her shapes and colors appear everywhere we look in retail. Prada did a bowling bag for spring and now everywhere you look you see it, and for winter they did a doctor bag and that is the biggest hit this fall with many designers. She also has incorporated a lot of fur and we see that all over jackets and accessories this fall. One thing that people notice is that Prada bags are very heavy and as Ms. Isaacsohn stated is that we all don’t have chauffer’s to carry around our handbags; but still women want the big oversized structured bags that Prada is famous for. People still love Miuccia first designs with the nylon bags, and store clerks still see women coming in everyday asking to purchase one.
Miuccia will always be known for making nylon incredibly fashionable and sexy, those nylon black bags are still seen being worn today, it is a lasting trend that she has succeeded in. I own a pair of Prada shoes and i love them dearly, they are made out of straw so not verry apporpriate for fall and winter, but when spring and summer come around they are the first pair of shoes I put on!
